Customizable & High Capacity

Aqua Components engineers have designed a second line of commercial reverse osmosis systems. This line, RO-300 Series, features systems that are able to purify higher capacities of water and are therefore made with higher quality materials. These brackish RO systems ideally treat tap/brackish water for the application of drinking water or other commercial uses that require ultra-purified water.

Compared to the RO-200 Series, RO-300 Series is displayed vertically and made with heavy-duty materials to withstand the higher capacity that it produces. For example, stainless steel piping is used in RO-300 brackish reverse osmosis system. Whereas, the RO-200 uses standard tubing. The high pressure pump is 316L stainless steel. Each pressure vessel has multi membrane, and the vessels are installed horizontally.

Brackish Reverse Osmosis Process

Brackish RO systems require pre-treatment of which is always included in the sale unless the water is already being treated. Pre-treatment systems depend on the quality of water that is treated along with the application. Taking those two into account is how our engineers recommend the most appropriate pre/post treatment for the system. Components of pre/post treatment include multimedia and activated carbon filters along with water softeners and UV sterilizers. A chemical dosing system and/or a cleaning skid are also incorporated into the system.

Brackish reverse osmosis systems are equipped to purify water from rivers, lakes, wells, and the sea. With high pressure pumps, water is pressurized to pass through a finely pored semi-permeable membrane and filter the water. Around 99% of contaminants including salts, bacteria, and other particles are removed leaving the water in its most purified form. The system releases the purified (permeate) water from one stream and the reject filled with concentrated contaminants from another. Depending on the application of the water, post-treatment may be applied.

High Capacity of BWRO Systems

The RO-300 series comes with many similar standard features as the RO-200 series. However, the capacity of RO-300 is a main differentiator between the two. RO-300 series is comprised of brackish reverse osmosis systems that can accommodate between 13,000 to 32,000 GPD with feed water TDS of 1000 ppm to 5000 ppm.

Commercial Reverse Osmosis Process:

Skid mounted commercial reverse osmosis purifiers are tasked with purifying water from water sources such as lakes, rivers and wells. Industrial Reverse Osmosis RO Water Treatment Process

Industrial reverse osmosis plant includes a multimedia prefilter, water softener or antiscalant dosing system, dechlorination dosing system, reverse osmosis unit with semi-permeable membranes, and ultraviolet sterilizers or post chlorination as a post treatment. These RO machines apply the technology of reverse osmosis by transporting feed water through a multimedia prefilter to remove particles that are larger than 10-micron. Then the water is injected by an antiscalant chemical to control hardness fouling that may cause damage to the membranes of the RO machine. These pretreatment options have the capability of removing hardness, chlorine, odors, color, iron, and sulfur. The water then continues into the reverse osmosis unit where a high-pressure pump applies extreme pressure to the highly concentrated solution, separating the remaining salts, minerals, and impurities that the pre-filter cannot catch. Fresh, potable water comes out from the low-pressure end of the membrane while salts, minerals, and other impurities are discharged into a drain on the other end. Industrial Reverse Osmosis System Buying Guide

In order to choose the correct RO model number, the following information must be provided:

1. 1. Flow rate (GPD, m3/day, etc.)
   2. Feed water TDS and water analysis: this information is important to prevent membranes from fouling, as well as help us choose the correct pre-treatment.
   3. Iron and manganese must be removed before the water enters reverse osmosis unit
   4. TSS must be removed before entering the Industrial RO system
   5. SDI for feedwater must be less than 3
   6. Water should be free from oil and grease
   7. Chlorine must be removed
   8. Available voltage, phase, and frequency (208, 460, 380, 415V)
   9. Dimensions of projected area where Industrial RO System will be installed

Note: If the feed water TDS exceeds 1,000 ppm, the system model number changes to BW-XXXK-XXXX, and a suffix is added to the end of the model number: “-3” is added if the TDS is 3,000 ppm or less, and “-5” is added if the TDS is 5,000 ppm or less. The parts that make up this large RO system include spiral membrane elements constructed from one or multiple membrane envelopes that are engrossed around a perforated central tube. The permeate flow is sent through layers of membranes into the envelope and makes its way to the central tube where it sits. The membrane layers are displayed in the picture to the right.

The Filtration Phases of Large Reverse Osmosis Systems

A large reverse osmosis system generally consists of distinct filtration and carbon constituents. Carbon filters work in conjunction with a large RO system to eradicate chlorine, chloramines, disinfectants, VOCs, and pesticides that enhance the taste and odor of water. Commercial water softeners also help by softening water that prevents membrane fouling. This multi-filtration method ensures an extremely purified solution for the production of highly pure water.

Modern large reverse osmosis systems also incorporate pre-filters to eliminate sand, particulate matter, rust, and turbidity that are capable of causing damage to the membranes. It is crucial that you the steps to safeguard your membranes from these potential threats so they can do their work. RO membranes are very efficient in removing a wide range of salt, dissolved solids, lead, heavy metals, organic & inorganic substances, microorganisms. These membranes take in water forced through the system by a high-pressure pump that drives water flow into the pores of the semi-permeable membranes.

There is a storage tank and other water purification optionals that can be used such as uv sterilizers that kill biological organisms, water deionizer systems used as post-filtration to ensure ultra-pure water.

Membrane Cleaning Skid

The membrane cleaning skid is designed for manual operation through a local control box located on the skid. A chemical storage tank is mounted on its own stand and connected to the membrane cleaning skid with either hard PVC piping or quick disconnect fittings and flexible hoses. This gives the unit the ability to be mounted in a permanent location or totally portable if desired. The piping is schedule 80 PVC that is hydrostatically tested at the factory. The electrical enclosure is NEMA 4X. All membrane cleaning skid wiring is completed and tested before shipment.

Membrane Cleaning Chemicals

Acid and alkaline cleaning chemicals are most commonly used for membrane cleaning. Acid cleaners are designed to remove inorganic and iron deposits. Acid cleaning should be performed at a pH of about 2. Alkaline cleaners are designed for removal of biological matter, organic foulants, and silica deposits. Alkaline cleaning is performed at a pH of about 12.

Membrane Cleaning Process

Reverse Osmosis membrane elements can experience a decline in performance due to the accumulation of deposits on the membrane surface. Mineral scale, colloidal particles, biological matter, and insoluble organic compounds are the usual causes of membrane fouling. When production of a Reverse Osmosis system drops by at least 10 percent, or the differential pressure increases by 15 percent (over normal operating conditions), membrane cleaning should be performed using a membrane cleaning skid. The following is a summary of the design of Aquacomponents, Inc. membrane cleaning skids and cleaning chemicals. Industrial nanofiltration systems are designed with advanced nanotechnology for the purposes of improving the capability of removing extremely high TDS levels from water. These NF systems are built-in with elastic features that have fewer maintenance requirements than RO systems and water softeners, including being less prone to fouling.   

Industrial users favor the utilization of nanofiltration systems over RO systems due to its greater capacity in allowing the passage of designed minerals and preventing the passage of unwanted organic compounds. This feature makes nanofiltration ideal in treating water sources that contain high degrees of bivalent ions such as calcium, magnesium, uranium and radium.

NF systems also have earned its reputation as being the most efficient hardness removing membrane technology on the market through targeting and eliminating hardness from water. Just as reverse osmosis systems are efficient in eradicating color, viruses, bacteria, and organic substances, nanofiltration provides the same productivity, along with removing other impurities such as pesticides, and microorganisms. All of these qualities result in the production of high-quality freshwater at a lower cost due to nanofiltration systems using less energy than RO systems.
