From its initial start-up, the SWRO system has been operating accordingly with minimal trouble-shooting. An industrial seawater RO system is designed to eliminate enormous quantities of salt and other contaminants from seawater using a technology called reverse osmosis. The reverse osmosis technology consists of using a high pressure pump which exerts extreme pressure to salty water, pushing it through semi-permeable membranes while rejecting salts and other contaminants from going through. The amount of pressure that needs to be applies relies on the ocean’s specific TDS and temperature. The RO membranes are specifically built to remove particulates while dividing the feed water between purified water and rejected concentrated salts. The salts and the other contaminants are discarded into the brine stream then flushed into a drain. Finally, purified water with 99% less dissolved salts comes out on the permeate side and is ready to be collected.

From its initial start-up, the system has been running properly with minimal trouble-shooting. Seawater reverse osmosis systems are mainly designed for the removal of enormous amounts of salt and other impurities from highly inconsumable water sources like the sea. These systems take use of a popular process known as “reverse osmosis” to help in seawater purification. The job of reverse osmosis is to defeat the osmotic pressure of a natural process called “osmosis”. Osmosis naturally pushes salt through a very fine membrane from an area with low saline concentration to an area with high saline concentration. The goal of osmosis is to gain an equal amount of saline concentration on both sides. To stop this natural process, reverse osmosis pushes osmosis in the opposite direction by using a high pressure pump that adds extreme pressure to the highly concentrated saline side of the membrane. The pressure pushes only water molecules through the small pores of the membrane while rejecting salts and other impurities from flowing through. Clean, potable water successfully comes out on the permeate side while salt and the other impurities are dumped into a drain from the concentrate side.

Water Challenges: Converting seawater into drinking water is a hefty challenge due to the extremely high levels of saline present in the ocean. Humans who consume large portions of seawater risk toxication since our bodies are unable to dispose of the high amount of salt that is ingested from the water. While the human body is naturally able to eliminate excess salt with urine produced by our kidneys, it required freshwater to quell the salt in order for the kidneys to function properly. For this reason, seawater must be treated with water purification systems that work to eradicate the high levels of salt before being used as drinking water. This project concentrated on delivering a seawater reverse osmosis system that produces drinking water from seawater for a company in the UAE.

Water Challenges: Since tanker ships conduct most of their operations throughout offshore locations, crew members face issues of transportability of basic necessities such as freshwater. Packaging water bottles and containers are generally the only options that works on these ships have to bring clean water for drinking, and other applications. When supplies run out, there is little they can do to generate more since they are far from shore. For this reason, utilizing the abundant seawater that surrounds them is the only real solution to insufficient freshwater supplies. In order to convert seawater into usable freshwater, the former must undergo a treatment process that removes the extremely high concentrations of salt and other impurities that make ocean water unable to consume or use in appliances. Water treatment systems that include reverse osmosis are the most preferred method of choice to use for this application, and is reliable in producing fresh and potable water.

Water Challenges: In hot climate countries such as Saudi Arabia where the availability of freshwater is very minimal, the ocean is depended on to acquire water supplies. Seawater is used for many applications in Saudi Arabia, including irrigation, and required desalination in order to remove unwanted contaminants such as salts. Salt concentration in seawater is extremely high and must undergo seawater reverse osmosis before being applied to irrigation systems or else the presence of salt will greatly diminish the system’s performance. As a result, plants will begin to fail to grow and food supplies will be reduced, which requires food to be imported from other countries to feed the population.

Pure Aqua, Inc. seawater reverse osmosis plants are designed to run under high or low TDS conditions. The built-in (VFD) Variable Frequency Drive can be adjusted to increase or lower the operation pressure according to feed water TDS and temperature. The VFD feature coupled with the Energy Recovery turbine system greatly improves the system efficiency and lowers electrical consumption. In today’s high energy cost globe, these are important features to have in any seawater reverse osmosis SWRO plant. To minimize antiscalant consumption dosing PA0100, the Pure Aqua SWRO plant utilizes low recovery ratio design. This simplifies the chemical storage logistics and reduces the cost of chemicals. This design also utilized low flux rate design (GFD) to ensure long membrane productivity life.

Fortunately, these offshore applications occur on the ocean where there is nearly unlimited amounts of water to be used. However, seawater must be treated in order to be used for virtually any application, since it contains a very high concentration of salt, along with other impurities.

From its initial start-up, the system has been running properly with minimal trouble-shooting. Industrial seawater reverse osmosis systems are mainly designed for the removal of enormous amounts of salt and other impurities from highly inconsumable water sources like the sea.

Water Challenges: Water-scarce countries in the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia, have answered their long-standing water challenges with the usage of seawater reverse osmosis. Seawater reverse osmosis is required in order to remove the extremely high levels of salt in ocean water, which makes it unsuitable for use in food processing, and virtually every industrial application. With greater utilization of reverse osmosis, Saudi Arabia can continue to feed their population by supplying food processing companies with enough high quality water to maintain quality standards in the food and beverage industry.

The system came equipped with a cleaning skid. As the feed water enters the system, it is directed to the sideline sediment cartridge filters. Next, the feed continues onto 2X20 horsepower motors with stainless steel pumps to then go through two 4 inch in diameter Hydranautics pressure vessels. The pressure vessels are made in the United States and rated to 1,000 PSI. At the lead end, the system includes a clean in place (CIP) function that cleans the membranes using a specific tank for this very purpose. The system is controlled by a PLC manufactured by Allen Bradley which includes a touch panel screen and a variable frequency drive which serves to protect the motors and results in a more efficient operation. The control panel comprises of complete control over the inlet/outlet valves of each part of the system as well as backwashing routine and alerts that can be set manually to monitor the operations of the system.

RO systems are powerful systems that are capable of taking out large amounts of salt, minerals, and other contaminants from water sources such as wells, rivers, and lakes. To master this mission, the systems make use of a popular technology known as “reverse osmosis”. Reverse osmosis is ordered with the reversal of a natural process known as “osmosis”. Osmosis is ordered by nature to transport salt through a semipermeable membrane from an area of low solute concentration to an area of higher solute concentration in order to gain an even amount of solute concentration on both sides of the membrane. Reverse osmosis combats osmosis via a pressure pump which exerts high pressure to the highly concentrated side of the semi-permeable membrane, moving only water molecules through the small pores of the membrane while salts, organics, and other contaminants are denied passage. Potable water finally emerges and is gathered on the permeate side of the membrane, while salts and other contaminants are thrown into a brine stream then into a drain.

Providing high quality drinking water in these locations is one of the most important components for maximum customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, freshwater supplies are very limited in Saudi Arabia, which has forced the country to adopt advanced methods to produce clean water. The ocean has continued to be a dependable source of water through the means of reverse osmosis (desalination), which works in removing salts and minerals from seawater. As these impurities are eliminated from seawater, it is then considered sufficiently purified to consume or use in other applications.
