Water Challenges: Since tanker ships conduct most of their operations throughout offshore locations, crew members face issues of transportability of basic necessities such as freshwater. Packaging water bottles and containers are generally the only options that works on these ships have to bring clean water for drinking, and other applications. When supplies run out, there is little they can do to generate more since they are far from shore. For this reason, utilizing the abundant seawater that surrounds them is the only real solution to insufficient freshwater supplies. In order to convert seawater into usable freshwater, the former must undergo a treatment process that removes the extremely high concentrations of salt and other impurities that make ocean water unable to consume or use in appliances. Water treatment systems that include reverse osmosis are the most preferred method of choice to use for this application, and is reliable in producing fresh and potable water.

Applied Solution: Pure Aqua, Inc. designed a commercial SWRO kit for use by a major company in Saudi Arabia. The RO unit was chosen from our SWC series and intended to produce approximately 3,000 GPD from a seawater beach well with feed TDS up to 42,000 ppm. The kit includes pre-treatment equipment consisting of chemical dosing and multimedia filtration for removal of particles prior to reverse osmosis filtration.

Water Challenges: In hot climate countries such as Saudi Arabia where the availability of freshwater is very minimal, the ocean is depended on to acquire water supplies. Seawater is used for many applications in Saudi Arabia, including irrigation, and required desalination in order to remove unwanted contaminants such as salts. Salt concentration in seawater is extremely high and must undergo seawater reverse osmosis before being applied to irrigation systems or else the presence of salt will greatly diminish the system’s performance. As a result, plants will begin to fail to grow and food supplies will be reduced, which requires food to be imported from other countries to feed the population.

Applied Solution: This seawater water treatment system is headed for the country of Saudi Arabia. Included is a Chlorination step, a Coagulant step, Multi Media Filtration to reduce turbidity particulates, followed by Dechlorination, Antiscalant Injection and then the Reverse Osmosis (RO) System. This SW-16K-1480 system was selected from the SWI Series which is designed to produce 16,000 GPD from seawater feed of up to 40,000 PPM TDS.

Pure Aqua, Inc. seawater reverse osmosis plants are designed to run under high or low TDS conditions. The built-in (VFD) Variable Frequency Drive can be adjusted to increase or lower the operation pressure according to feed water TDS and temperature. The VFD feature coupled with the Energy Recovery turbine system greatly improves the system efficiency and lowers electrical consumption. In today’s high energy cost globe, these are important features to have in any seawater reverse osmosis SWRO plant. To minimize antiscalant consumption dosing PA0100, the Pure Aqua SWRO plant utilizes low recovery ratio design. This simplifies the chemical storage logistics and reduces the cost of chemicals. This design also utilized low flux rate design (GFD) to ensure long membrane productivity life.

Water Challenges: Industrial water is required to go through a process before being used in any manufacturing operations. The unfortunate part is that most of these water are acquired from seawater and brackish water sources, which makes it unable to use throughout industrial applications. Groundwater, rivers, lakers, and other water systems makeup the bulk of water distribution to process, rinse, and boiler feed water. But before being used in these operations, the process water must be treated and undertake filtration procedures to eradicate contaminants and convert into fresh, clean water.

Applied Solution: Pure Aqua designs and constructs media filtration systems for any water filtration or treatment application worldwide. A set of five identical media filters were manufactured for a major company in Saudi Arabia. Each of these tanks has a flow rate of one hundred gallons per minute.

The tanks are designed for use with sand, anthracite, and gravel, which are primarily used for the reduction of large particles and common contaminants.

Water Challenges: Reverse osmosis membranes are very delicate layers that require safety from outside sources. Water hardness in particular, leads to detrimental effects to the RO membranes through scaling around its surface, which reduces its efficiency to filter contaminants. For this reason, reverse osmosis is not recommended as other water treatment systems in removing minerals such as magnesium, and calcium from the feed water. 

Applied Solution: Pure Aqua designs and manufactures water treatment systems for treatment such hardness reduction needs, worldwide. A recent application saw two of our advanced identical twin alternating water softeners being completed and shipped to a major company in Saudi Arabia. They are each designed to treat municipal tap water at a rate of one hundred eighty-five gallons per minute. An alternating water softener, like this model, can switch automatically to a standby tank of resin to continually provide softened water while the first tank recharges.

Due to this occurrence, water softeners are the preferred choice of lowering water hardness, and shielding the RO system from foulants, which ultimately extends the lifespan of the membranes.

Brackish water reverse osmosis would work to purify water that comes from a well, lake, or river. Brackish water is typically a combination of pure water and seawater leaving in at a medium level of salinity. A medium level of salinity however, is not acceptable for consumption. The process in which the water goes through in order to be pure is referred to as reverse osmosis.   

Water Challenges: Pilot plants test the water to see the concentration of contaminants that exists within the feed water. Contaminants such as uranium and radium are considered highly toxic when exposed to humans in elevated levels with water. They can cause various diseases, including cancer and kidney damage when ingested or consumed. For this reason, reverse osmosis has been used at a greater rate to remove these unwanted impurities from the water. Fresh and potable water is the end result of the reverse osmosis process, and can be produced at a high enough quality for consumption, or for use in virtually any industrial, commercial, or domestic application.

Applied Solution: Pure Aqua manufactured and supplied an industrial pilot unit to a major water treatment company in Saudi Arabia for the removal of radium and uranium from water, complete with pre and post treatment equipment using advanced PLC control panel and colored touch panel.

Water Challenges: An untold amount of brackish water resides underneath the world’s surface with great potential to be used for various applications, including consumption. The only problem with this specific water source is that they contain high turbidity, and total suspended solids to be capable of utilizing. The only solution to this problem is treating it with effective treatment such as water filtration, which is done here at Pure Aqua through the designing of filtration systems that works to eliminate elevated levels of turbidity, suspended solids, and other pollutants from brackish water.

Applied Solution: Pure Aqua manufactured and supplied a water filtration system to Najran University, KSA. Since the initial startup, the system has been functioning accordingly with minimal troubleshooting. A commercial water filtration system is manufactured for the purpose of taking out massive amounts of turbidity, particulates, and other contaminants from brackish water. Brackish water is water that is taken from estuaries and river openings. It salt concentration falls in between freshwater and seawater. Not as pure as fresh water, yet not as salty as seawater. Its mild salty concentration is discouraged for human consumption. To generate purified water from brackish water, a water filtration system relies on a method called “reverse osmosis” for assistance. Reverse osmosis accomplishes the massive elimination of salts, particulates, and other contaminants found in water by applying extreme pressure through the use of a pump to the highly concentrated saline side of a partially-porous membrane. The RO membrane only allows water molecules to be carried through the tiny pores of the membrane while salts, particulates, and other contaminants are blocked and dumped into the brine stream then into the drain. This is when clean, potable water comes out and is ready to be collected on the lower end of the membrane. Green sand filters are specifically used to reduce iron for water treatment applications. They utilize green sand which is a type of sand that has a strong capability of reducing iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide from water through oxidation and filtration. Some of the advantages of green sand filters include a reduction in iron over wide pH range, an effective hydrogen sulfide reduction, no dangerous effects from chlorine feed, and a reduced attrition for an extended bed life.
