Water Concern Total dissolved solids (TDS) is the most commonly used measure of water quality. High accounts of TDS refer to elevated amounts of contaminants present usually in parts per million (PPM). Hotels utilize water in almost every part of their facility. From kitchens to pools to showers, water quality is integral to offering an exceptional customer experience. Elevated TDS levels in water can result in a variety of negative effects like taste and odor. Turbidity is another common issue that occurs with elevated TDS. In general, the term TDS is used to account for all the dissolved solids which can include specific harmful elements as well. Calcium and magnesium are two elements that are often present in water and they contribute to the hardness levels. Reducing the TDS would reduce the accounts of these elements and prevent the damage of any surfaces in contact with the water. Therefore, a purification system is necessary to provide for this industry’s water source to supply the multiple applications with almost zero TDS.

Applied Solution: This industrial reverse osmosis machine was recommended for a hotel in Oman to reduce TDS. The source of the water was municipal water of around 500 PPM TDS. For this particular customer we solely provided the reverse osmosis machine without pre/post treatment. The reverse osmosis machine was built to produce the capacity of 130,000 gallons per day and reduce the TDS level of 500 PPM TDS to less than 20 PPM. This will ensure the quality of water supplied to the hotel is completely purified and will only complement the various applications necessary.

The issue that stems from utilizing ultrafiltration in this application is that it has not proven to be more effective in eliminating TOC as compared to Nanofiltration.
Activated Carbon is tasked with removing chlorine, odor, and color from water as well as controlling the taste. Activated carbon simply eliminates impurities, viruses, soluble gases, and particles.

Activated carbon filter media comes in several types: coal based, wood based and coconut based each consisting of various particle sizes, base materials and activity.

Coal-based carbon filter media delivers excellent performance for contaminants and a large range of concentrations.

Coconut carbon filter media have an average performance rate with low boiling point along with low molecular weight compounds at lower concentrations. Wood based carbon media provide claim higher decolorization properties. The finer mesh sizes that are recommended for systems with lower flow rates.

Gravel is the first step in particulate filtration. Incoming water flow is equally distributed over the entire filtration bed because of the gravel’s spherical shape. The water flow is permitted to spread throughout the gravel into many areas within the gravel bed. Gravel only permits particles that are finer than its gaps to pass through and proceed to the next stage of particulate filtration. The larger particles that were blocked are pulled out and left either on top or within the gravel or completely eliminated during occasional flushings or other types of cleaning.

Gravel consists of three grades: coarse, medium, and fine and all need to be loaded into the tanks in that same manner. Activated carbon filtration systems is composed of carbon which has a small electro-positive charge applied to it that draws attention to chemicals and impurities. As water passes over the positively charged carbon surface, the contaminants negative ions are drawn towards the surface of the carbon granules. Activated carbon water filters are utilized as pretreatments to remove chlorine, odor, colors, and adjust taste before running feed water through a reverse osmosis system.

The system design was based on high rejection TFC Spiral wound low fouling membranes. The Water Maker produced 188,000 GPD at a maximum 45,000 PPM feed water TDS while the Brackish RO Unit produced 130,000 GPD with a 100 ppm feed water TDS. From its initial start-up, the units have been running smoothly with minimal trouble-shooting. As a result, the military base has a reliable and steady supply of drinkable water at a cost far less than shipping water to the site.

Water Challenges: Military bases in Oman, such as the “Ministry Of Defense” requires a large supply of freshwater for the purposes of providing drinking water to soldiers and equipment that require the use of water. Since Oman is a country that does not possess sufficient freshwater supplies, the country depends on taking water from the sea and converting it into fresh, usable water. Seawater reverse osmosis systems are the treatment solutions utilized to achieve the purification process that effectively eliminates all unwanted impurities from the water, such as high levels of salt and minerals, into ultra pure water.

Applied Solution: Pure Aqua successfully manufactured and supplied a Double Pass Industrial Water Maker followed by an Industrial Brackish Water RO Unit to produce drinking water with Boron content less than 1ppm for a military base at the Oman Ministry of Defense. The Industrial Water Maker was selected from our SWI Series, while the Industrial Brackish RO Unit was selected from our RO-400 Series. These units came complete with an advanced PLC, cleaning and flushing systems, coagulant, pre & post de-chlorination, and antiscalant dosing systems. Feed water to the system is processed water and seawater well.

Seawater reverse osmosis systems are built for highly inconsumable water sources like the sea, removing enormous amounts of salt and other contaminants from them. Denying salts, particulates, and other contaminants from carrying on, water molecules are only permitted through the tiny pores of the membrane. Fresh, purified water emerges on the permeate side and is ready to be collected while salt, particulates, and other contaminants are discharged into a drain from the concentrate side.

Water enters through the bottom port of the ultraviolet generator cell and swirls around a low pressure mercury vapor lamp, which emits powerful ultraviolet light energy at 235.7nm wave length. Bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms absorb the light energy which disrupts their DNA, and are destroyed safely inside a factory tested stainless steel cell. The treated water then exits through the top port of the cell and is ready for consumption.

Water Challenges: The reuse of greywater through media filtration is an efficient practice that is used in various applications such as irrigation and industrial facilities. Many farms are depending solely on the provision of formerly treated greywater to be incorporated in their equipment and system operation. Treatment is required since greywater contains extremely high degrees of pollution in the form of hardness creating minerals, organic substances, sediments, particles, etc. These contaminants can wreak havoc when applied to industrial, commercial, and domestic applications. A rapidly growing practice is reusing greywater and treated sewage effluent (TSE) for the utilization in the irrigation industry. This wastewater, after going through a Membrane Bio-Reactor and Ultrafiltration, may not be suitable for drinking water but is perfect for use in farming and irrigation. There are even farms that rely solely on TSE for their water, taking no water from underground aquifers.
